Android sales tripled, growing iPhone and Windows Phone 7 drops more ... - Techworld

If

Android smartphone sales have almost tripled over the past year and continue to grow the iPhone, Windows Phone achieved the impossible: delivered fewer devices last quarter than the same period in 2010. Worse, the results of Nokia - its main partner - were not any good.

The numbers are from Gartner, which found that the number of smartphones sold has increased by 42% - which makes the startling performance of WP7. The Microsoft platform, which distributed 2.2 million devices in the third quarter of last year, sold only 1.7 million in the same three months of this year, and saw its market share - which includes Windows Mobile - drop by 2, 7% to 1.5%.

Android, on the other hand, doubled its presence, is 25.3% had previously dominated the industry, it now holds 52.5%, thanks to the 60.5 million smartphones sold, up from 20.5 million in 2010 . Apple, while increasing their sales - 13.5 million to 17.3% - saw its share decline slightly from 16.6% to 15%. The index, however, can be explained by the delay in launching the iPhone 4S, as many consumers chose to wait for it instead of buying the previous generation.

time of Nokia, like Microsoft's also not convincing. She distributed 105.4 million phones, less, so that 117.5 million in the third quarter of 2010. Still, she remained in the lead the industry with 23.9% share.

The figures show how the two companies agreed see the partnership as a kind of salvation. In last Wednesday (16/11), research Appcelerator / IDC found that 38% of developers are "very interested" in preparing applications for WP7, up eight percentage points in the pr evious survey. One reason for the growth is just the launch of Lumia 800, the first line of the top smartphone manufacturer to the platform.
